To qualify for an initial appointment (4-year term) to the office of notary public in the State of Illinois, one must:

Be at least 18 years of age or older.
Be a citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence.
Be a resident of the State of Illinois or employed in the state of Illinois for at least 30 days.
Submit an application to be appointed a notary public, and pay a $10 State appointment fee.
Be able to read and write the English language.
Have not been convicted of a felony; and have not had a notary commission revoked during the past 10 years (Sec. 2-102).
Obtain a surety bond in the amount of $5,000, available from The American Association of Notaries!
